A Gentleman’s Take
A rather outstanding aviation watch that not a lot of people talk about, I wonder why? Although it is rocking a 40mm case, The Oris Big Crown Pointer Date doesn’t look or feel bulky at all, perhaps it is the coin-edged bezel that gave it a really clean look. The brushed lugs and screw-down crown fits really well on your wrist, it doesn’t feel like any other watch, more like a really delicate trinket that is gently resting on your wrist.
Now comes my favourite part, the dial. First, let’s take a look at the peripheral of the dial, the Oris Cal 754 allowed the pointer date function that is achieved with the pitch-fork like fourth hand and the date scale surrounding the outer edge of the dial.
Another highlight is the colour Oris carefully chose for this series. The airforce blue dial paired with the brown leather strap is absolutely ravishing, the sage green dial is equally beautiful. Who would have thought these two shades of colour on a watch was everything I’ve ever needed?
Minute and hour hands reminded me of stained glass seen in churches, especially the hour-hand. The diamond at the tip and two identical ovals come together to form an elegant design. Dial numerals are prominent, even though the font is leaning towards the minimalistic end of the spectrum, but combined with the date scale, it didn’t take away the classic aviation watch aesthetic, radiating a bold and adventurous vibe.
A really style friendly watch, by that I mean you can easily pair this with any outfit without clashing styles. Sitting at a reasonable $1,600 – $1,800 price range, 10/10 would recommend.
